GIRLS' FRONTLINE 2: EXILIUM

GIRLS' FRONTLINE 2: EXILIUM

I understand the story. I don't understand the details
In short, the guy is tasked with delivering stuff. Stuff is not exactly the kind of stuff you wanna deliver. Things go south and the contractor is actually an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bla bla bla (I haven't played more, don't know what comes next yet).

What I don't like is that this a continuation from the first title. That wouldn't be a problem if the first game weren't whats commonly known as gacha game, meaning that to know the story I have to play the game, grind, wait... And no I won't watch youtube videos or read a book, I like to experience things first hand and the gameplay isn't my thing.

Can I play the story, not understanding who is who and be happy? And just in case, its a serious question, even if it looks like its not.

At a certain point the game will start involving old characters and factions, and won't do much to get you up to speed, probably because it would take too damn long. Since in order to fully understand the situation the world is in it's advisable to look up some background lore anyway, whether you're playing this game, the previous one, or Reverse Collapse (which is here on steam too and is not a gacha, if you're interested), you might as well include some story summaries while you're at it.

For example, in Final Fantasy XIII theres a whole section to read about the world. I guess that would take too much effort to implement.
You don't need to play GFL1, you can read the story on Youtube:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/12MAYsrlTA9R2lfP81c8gG-6tGaXTzK12Mp2scVYMw-4/edit?tab=t.0

This doc has all the events of the main storyline in the order you should read them.

1.
You dont actually need to Play the First Game to Understand the Story.
Pls Note. There is a 10 Year Gap here. And even Old Players dont know what happened there.
Not understanding certain Details is Intended and will be Revealed over time.
The References to the First Game which require to actually have Played the Game are mostly on the Emotional Side and will make Old Players Remember the Events. But only have very Limited Story Relevance.

Old Players as well do not know about what happened to Groza in the meantime.
They dont know about Nemesis or Krolik.
They dont know the Contents of the Box or the Story Connections Yet.

The First Trailer after the Tutorial (Groza Falling and going into this Memory Snow Mode)
Is all References to Scenes and Characters of the First Game.
Including some of the Emotional Backstories. But its only References to the Past. It holds no actual Relevance to the Second Game´s Story.

Likewise. Players who Played the First Game will likely Realize and Recognize some of the Characters. But them being old Friends is Revealed Quickly.
The Biggest Relevance actually missed would be why the Commander at some Point tells his Crew that this Contact has his Full Unconditional Trust.
Older Players will likely know right away who it is and why the Commander Trusts them that much.
But even that Gap is only kept blank for a Short Time before its explained by the current Story.

TLDR. You really dont need to know the Story of the First Game to Play this.
What You are missing is some of the Emotional Reunions and Backstory References.
You might also miss out on some of the Relationships of the Commander.
But You wont miss anything Major.
And while Older Players might catch References and thus Recognize some things Faster. The things are ultimately explained a bit later. So all the Older Players get is that they will know a bit earlier whats happening or who they are talking to.

2.
Now. I am aware You already said you dont want to. But If You want to know the First Games Story to get all the References. You really got only the Choice of either Watching a Story Playthrough on YouTube.
Or Play the Game Yourself.
Pls note. Playing the First Game as a Story Playthrough does not require Spending Money etc. The Story is not a Challenge Mode. So it can be Played Perfectly well without Spending Money or getting Meta Dolls for Your Team.
Still. Watching a YouTube Playthrough of the Story would still be much Faster.

3.
You can get a Rough Idea of the Story by Reading the Wiki of course.
This will not allow You to get all References. But it will tell You what happened.
By the Way. There is also ALOT of Past Lore Summaries Inside the Game which You can Read up on inside GFL2.

Is reverse collapse the story of GFL 1? since the store says "retold"

No, it's a remake of an older game set 30 years after Girls' Frontline.
