[Spoilers] So I watched Pewdiepie's video of Episode 1...
And I am just...incredibly sad at the end of the first episode.

I know nothing about Game of Thrones (save for its reputation of graphic violence and nudity...), but I know Telltale makes fantastic story games so I thought I'd see watch Pewdiepie's playthrough so I can get an idea how how this game looks and feels before buying it myself. But I must say...my interest in the game has kinda plummeted after the rather sudden and violent death of Ethan. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. To quote Pewdiepie, "WHAT THE ♥♥♥♥?!"

Why introduce someome with so much potential, who could have grown into a better protagonist with our choices, only to kill him off at the end of episode 1?! What the ♥♥♥♥. Who else wishes Ethan got better treatment from the writers? 8U;

Mistake #1: you watched Poopoopie.

But people dying left and right is part of the A Song Of Ice And Fire experience. Characters die. Main characters, too. Ethan's death is well within the legacy of GRRM being a homicidal maniac to his ASOIAF characters.

You watched EP 1. That "King in the North" everyone talks about in the beginning? Big, main character. His mother, too. They get killed, just like this.

I'm more surprised that Ethan is the only main death so far.

Welp. 8D; I guess this is why it's advised to be a bit familiar with the source material before diving in. It might be time to check out the show itself...

@Cooper: One of the points of GoT is that life is not a novel. Sometimes ♥♥♥♥ happens, and "character progression" is not a valid excuse to prevent them. In the original material, some characters make bad decisions based on a romantic or idealistic outlook on life and as opposed to pretty much any fantasy book on earth, these decisions have consequences (that are not always death but it's part of the deal). And sometimes, like here, people are blown away by forces out of their control.

Ramsay snow was coming and if you knew the character, you knew there was no way in hell it could have gone better (apart from poor writing/lack of courage from the devs which I'm happy to say didn't occur). I'd even go as far as to say what happens was a best case scenario. Like they say at the end, Ethan kind of saved half of his family and all of his house by standing up to Ramsay because in any case someone had to die.

It adds to the realism of the setting and fits the source material. When you think about it, episode 1 was not as much about introducing the characters as it was the setup for the choices you were going to have to make in order to save your house, and Ethan's death was the cold splash of water to the face to bring it home.

Yeah one of the features of the franchise is that it's sometime brutally realistic in its treatment of its characters.

Characters in this world don't always live and die by the obvious conventional reasons that they seem to be the main character or that they have potential to make things better, in fact often the characters that, for example, hold secrets that need to be revealed to the realm (and the audience) get the chop quite quickly. They die because they made mistakes, or they pose a threat to the wrong person, or because the face insurmountable odds, or simply because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Conversely, though, not everybody dies just because they could die. Some of the characters manage to survive through luck, skill, or even in some cases supposed divine intervention.

It's about how vulnerable and fragile people actually are, how resilient they can be, and who will live long enough to achieve their own goals.

It can be very exciting.
