And yes, he deserted. If he's caught, he will be killed. One deserter went as far as Braavos, and was killed by some young assassin...
Let's say betraying his vows it's a perfect way to get himself killed, for he has become a public enemy: The duty of any Lord who finds him in his lands is to kill him.
Kind of it isn't as if the Nights Watch despatched the assassin or that it was an assassination as such. It occurs because the character who kills him realises he has deserted and decides to kill him but it was also a chance encounter. Generally if a deserter can get out of Westeros they're probably safe.
Deserters to essos will be safe perhaps?
In the sense of someone is lell likely to kill them for deserting the Night's Watch. The various other dangers in the world of ASIOAF however.
After all, if they murder you there, they'll have to answer to the Braavosi authorities; for them, that you are killing some guy because he's a deserted doesn't mean anything.
The only concern, however, would be the livelyhood. Our beloved and silly squire doesn't know nothing about nothing, he has no money and no trade (apart pig farming, something that doesn't help if you don't have pigs or a farm), he's a fighter and that's all. So I guess he could join a merc company to make ends meet.
If he later ends fighting dragons or knights of the Vale as a result of who hires that company, well, that's out of his hands.
