Correlation to the books...?
I am currently reading the book series, and have not yet watched the TV-series whatsoever (although I have ofc been spoiled plenty).
I plan to watch the whole TV-series when I have read all the currently published books, and my goal is to finish the books and currently released 7 seasons of the show *before* the premiere of the last season next year.
So I am up to date.

I have not yet purchased this game, for reasons stated below:

As of right now, I have just started reading the second half of "A Storm of Swords" (book 3 out of the current 5).

My question:
When does this game take place in the timeline, in terms of the books?
I don't want to buy/play the game until I know I have reached a point in the books where it doesn't spoil the plot.

So...
What books should I have at least have read before starting this game?
I have heard that you should finish the third book (which roughly translates to season 3 and 4 of the TV-series) - is this true?

Any guidance is appreciated!

I'd say the first four books. It's been a couple of years since I read them, but this takes place during book 3, and I'm including book 4 as a buffer for any overlap.

I see...
I'm about halfway in part 2 of Storm of Swords now.

Yeah. You definitely need to finish book 3 first or there will be major spoilers even though the game has no impact on the books, the events of the books impact the story.

Despite being a fan of ASOIAF myself, I'd also discourage you from buying the game. It's a good miniseries/TV show, but as a game, it's awful. Your input has no impact. I'd recommend watching a let's play on youtube. It's less aggravating.

The Telltale game is based on the show and set around season three/four.

Yeah, I know that much.
But what I'm asking is what books I must have read in order to not spoil the story.

All of them.

Game of Thrones, Clash of Kings, Storm of Swords, Feast of Crows and Dance of Dragons.
