I couldn't have asked for more in a game.

I suppose that to the completely uninitiated, Tales from the Borderlands plays out like an action-comedy caper film set in unfamiliar surroundings, but to those who already love the Borderlands games, it feels a bit like coming home. I really love the way Telltale designed the opening sequence, menu screens, and opening credits in the style of the Borderlands games, so from the very start this is exactly how the game feels.

The artwork from the Borderlands series is a great fit for the Telltale format, and allows the setting to blend seamlessly into the graphic novel-style artwork Telltale uses to render its stories. The music of Borderlands is pretty distinctive too, and the team did a fantastic job of incorporating that into the story as well (in the case of the episode one boss, quite literally).

The story is very fast paced, with a lot of twists and turns and flashbacks. With two protagonists — a Hyperion corporate lackey and a Pandoran thief — you also quite literally get parts of the same story playing out a little differently from two perspectives. Narratively, it reminds me a bit of Pulp Fiction with the perspective jumps, as well as the rapid-fire pacing and snappy dialogue.

The action sequences are amazing (if not completely plausible) and really keep you engaged with the story. The dialogue is hilarious, and it was fun picking some of the wittier options and seeing how the scene played out. The voice acting is great too, though I did find it extremely odd at times to have conversations with some of Pandora's bandits and psychos.

If you're the impatient type, you might want to wait until all the episodes come out before buying the season, as it looks like they're going to be spaced a few months apart. I plan to update my review as the episodes are released, but so far I really love the story and the characters. I can't wait to see "cameo" appearances by some of the other vault hunters and NPCs from the Borderlands games, and I also can't wait to see what happens with the new characters Tales From the Borderlands has introduced.

It's not exactly Walking Dead, and it's not exactly Borderlands. But if you enjoy one or both of those, you should love this game. It still keeps in a lot of Borderlands elements (inventory, loot, humor, etc.), while still playing like the familiar Telltale point-and-click adventure.

The first episode offers a lot (about 2 1/2 hours if you look around), and you're immediately latched to the characters. You know about everyone's motives about the second they show up, and know if you like them or not. The writing is still Borderlands-style, so you may get more for your mileage if you're familiar with the series, but it's very well done. It's not full of boner jokes (yet), but there's still the silly stuff in there. The game relies a bit more on the inventory like Sam & Max than Walking Dead (still no combining items again, though) ie. Fiona's character uses cash that can directly influence conversation, whereas Rhys's lets him scan things to let you learn more about the world, and sometimes find items. Which works well from being based on a game centered on loot.

All-in-all -- it's humorous, well-writ, suspenseful, and most of all - good. If you're hesitant in any way, you could pick up on a sale, but as a fan of Telltale and Borderlands it was worth every dollar. And I'm sure even non-fans would enjoy the ride this game gives you.

For anyone who doesn't know yet: it's not a game per-se, it's more of a interactive movie, really. Some sentence choices, some (rather arbitrary) clicking, some bare-bones 'secrets', various paths through the main story, etc. Put it like that, it doesn't sound like much, but this one is written by someone who knew their job very well—great sense of humor and Borderlands tropes galore. I really recommend if you like the latter. You will feel at home.

Word of a warning, though. Although the game offers some replayability, sorta', it's almost incredibly short for its kind. And guess what—it ends with a cliffhanger. One that baits you to 'finish the story' by spending more bucks on another installment. Someone could argue that it's packed with action and twists and all, but even so, this would've left a somewhat bitter aftertaste if I have bought it for the full price. I don't think that 20 EUR is justified for those 3-4 hours worth of an 'interactive movie' that is not even 'ending properly'.

(My acc says 8,3 but I often forget games on afk, so it's far from the actual gameplay time)

The Walking Dead is serious and realistic, The Wolf Among Us is dark and full of suspense.
And Tales from the Borderlands is funny and action packed!

Just finished the series, and man, it's #@!$ good!!!

I would say this is the best Telltale games so far, it can make you laugh out loud, yet it can also make you cry out loud.

And also, you get to learn a moral from this story:
Friends are important, together we can achieve anything :D

I guess there's a lot to say about the game but I'll keep it short for ya'll. If you really want to read some in-depth critisism you can check out the lower part the review. If you just want to know if this game is good for you, just read the short COOL-list up here.

COOL:
+ Tales really captures the Borderlands' iconic mix of action and humour.
+ Dialogue is quite solid, be it in a serious or humorous scene. Has it's off-moments though, but that's to be expected when...
+ ...You have about 10 hours of story going on. Quite a long journey with lots of twists and turns.
+ Which means it's definately worth it's price, especially on sale.
+ It feels interesting to control two protagonists and how your choices on one can benefit/harm the other.
+ Exploring Pandora from a different perspective is exactly what I wanted from this game.
+ Strong female lead characters? Hell yeah, all over the place. Vallory is the BOMB and love Athena as well.
+ Compared to the main series, this game's ending(s?) actually feels more satisfying imo. All nicely wrapped up and makes you rush to the interwebs to see how other people dealt with it all.
+ Handsome Jack
+ Loader Bot

NOT-SO-COOL:
I don't have much to complain about with Tales. It might not be for all Borderlands fans because the experience is something completely different but it does what it wants to do nearly flawlessly. Normally I make a small list but there are only two big gripes that I have, mostly because I like the game so much, so I'm sorry if they take a bit longer to explain:

- Very little "game" going on here. I know that's what most people expect from games like these, but let me explain why that's sometimes a problem.There is a ton of action to see, and it's all REALLY cool but comes with some problems. It sometimes takes over 20 minutes of 'movie' before you have to do anything, and then it even comes completely without warning. (Making you spill your delicious whatever-you're-holding as you rush to the controls) With this it feels random when you can or can't control things, as you can sometimes go through a bunch of action scenes without pressing one button and suddenly you're in charge of a single dodge or whatever. And on top of that EVERY ACTION in the game is literally just "up-down-left-right and mash the mash button". Come on TellTale, your adventures are supposed to be more on the creative side. On top of that, the game-interface can sometimes really distract you from the cool action or vice versa.
- The thing about strong female characters I said before? I comes with a catch. The catch being that every single MALE lead in the story is either incompetent, evil, insane or a combination of these traits. You don't notice at first, but the more the story progresses the more you see the "Girls rule boys drool" theme that, as the story builds up and I was waiting for Rhys to get some redemption (that never came), the entire story started feeling less genuine and real and more written as a "take that" to some of the more generic opinions about women in games out there.

Two quick examples of how this started to feel weird
SPOILERS. SKIP THIS PART AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION.
- Argually the most badass bunch of scenes in the game; Vallory shows up to capture Athena, Fiona and Gordys. Through this entire sequence all we see Rhys and Vaughn do is be pathetic in several degrees. Granted, Vaughn is a badass just for surviving on Pandora being the Desk-Monkey that he is, but it still feels... off because while all the girls seem to get some character development and become more badass as the story goes along while the guys.... just kinda stay the same one-note characters they were at the start of the game. Vaughn, who became a 'rebel leader' of sorts, is still as incompetent at the final battle as he was all game. Which was a sad surprise.
- If the last bit didn't make you mad yet, then this might. Fiona... is a Mary-Sue. Yes, yes. I know many people use that argument incorrectly, but let's look at the evidence. No matter what decisions you make, unlike Rhys, NOBODY will start hating her outright, and even distrust is soon waved away. She excells at nearly everything and never messes up, even if she's improvising at something she's never done before. Athena taking her under her wing to become a Vault Hunter feels like a mistake. She was a "Badass Normal" as TVTropes would describe, but then the game hypes her up to be the next Big Vault Hunter because... why exactly? Because she shot a gun literally twice? (on targets that weren't even moving) Does Rhys ever get a similar type of treatment? No. He just stays gullible and idiotic all the way up till the finale so they could have Jack betray him again.

I don't know. Seems to me the writers had a definite favourite here. I loved Fiona at the start of the game. Her attitude, her 'lack of skill' similar to Rhys. The game itself made me slowly dislike her though, to the point where when she beat Rhys on the final sprint to the vault all I could say was "Off course she did, can't have Rhys take one little victory even at the end, eh game? Fiona is always on top of everything." When I said that, the feeling sunk in completely and kinda left a bad aftertaste in my mouth about the game in it's interity, and why half of this review is about this gripe of mine.



And that wraps it all up.

So Tales of the Borderlands is a definite recommendation for both Borderlands or TellTale fans, just be aware you might have to sit back for long bits so the game can play itself. If you think the things I mentioned sound good enough but are still unsure of playing this type of game, I really recommend checking it out when it's on sale.
