I warned him about the bomb, he tossed it away before it exploded, gave Fiona a look, and then escaped the arena.
1 Detail that was left out: if you make sure he lives thoughout the story, he will hack into Hyperion and give you enough money to hire the secret vaulthunter if you choose Felix at the end.

I was trying to figure this out, but I think I read that there's a plot hole with all this. If you tell him to choke on hit, he actually will die, even though later he would explain that he knew about the bomb. I guess because it would be too suspicious to suddenly know about the bomb anyway? But really, why would someone die over that? They also never ever explain how he knew about the bomb on the case in the first place, like when he switched the cases? It's pretty wild. Definitely something went wack.
