Just out of curiosity will this have any real affect on BL3's story. Or will it just be "Hey here's a Borderlands game have fun kids!" then in actual BL games this has no mention?

Well, it should be part of the canonical timeline since in the trailer they pointed it out. And the creators of Borderlands have said that they try to expand the world in ways that they can and let the fans know about it. :)

I've never touched Borderlands except for this.
I think it's just borderlands universe, but that'snot to say the chars in this game won't get nods in the next BL game.

Yes, it is canon, however a lot of this is a "Big Fish" story, with our two protagonists, Fiona and Rhys, relaying the story to a mysterious man, while telling lies. You aren't playing the whole truth, but part of the truth. For example, from what I heard, the start of Rhys story goes from reasonable to comppletely ridiculous, to which Fiona calls bull, and you are then given 4 choices to how the scenario actually played out. It's going to be interesting.
