This Vault was the "Vault of the traveler" which is a huge monster with teleportation abilities.
Like, how are you even confused?
The ending was really a ♥♥♥♥ move by Telltale/Gearbox in my opinion. I was so glad Sasha was alive and well and everything was okay. And then Fiona and Rhys simply disappear? WTF! At first I thought they just teleported back out of the Vault (I still hope that), but I doubt it.
I doubt that there will be a second season or a "Tales from the Borderlands 2" of some kind, as I imagine this game is supposed to be some sort of bridge between Borderlands 2 and a future Borderlands 3. But I still hope the "Tales..." story will be continued in some form, because not knowing what happened to Fiona and Rhys is driving me ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nuts!
What kind of annoys me is the fact that it's just Fiona and Rhys being teleported away, leaving everyone else behind. I mean, they just had a conversation about Rhys' intentions with Sasha and now he doesn't get to be with her at all? And Fiona was so glad Sasha was still alive and that she didn't lose her, and now she loses her anyway? Those are the questions that are driving me crazy.
I really hope Borderlands 3 or the second season of Tales From The Borderlands (or whatever the next game in the franchise is) clarifies this and features Sasha, Vaughn, Loader Bot and Gortys. I think it would be really sad if the team couldn't get together again :(
Because what they do next isn't really relevant to the story. All the loose ends are tied up. They overcame their differences, beat the odds, and opened the vault together. Mission accomplished, good narrative ending! Adding on more (like specifically what kinds of money or technology or guns or whatever that they find in the Vault) would just be unnecessary padding. You don't want a Return of the King ending, do you?
Telltale and Gearbox are not stupid, they must have known that players would wonder where Rhys and Fiona went.
I mean, Telltale/Gearbox could have made Fiona and Rhys just collect whatever is in that chest and go away with it. Why make them teleport away at the end? I'm certain that this was done on purpose, to leave some space for a future game.
Besides, none of the other vaults contained any real "treasure" other than the vault monster's loot. The Destroyer's vault contained Eridium (which, I admit, is probaby a kind of treasure), the Elpis vault contained that vault sign thing that showed visions of the Warrior and its vault, the Warrior's vault contained a map with different planets on it. So I think the Traveler's vault contains a teleporter that leads to another planet.
I'm probably just putting too much thought into it, though.
I managed to finish this game after over 1 year in my steam library and I am really satisfied with the ending as it leaves enough potential for an individual interpretaion. In my opinions they both didn't teleport at all. They opened the vault and the player doesn't get to see what's in it. After the screen fades white for a moment the next scene doesn't connects to the previous one from the aspect of time. I think after the white screen the time was fastened forward for some minutes so Rhys and Fiona got back out of the vault with the treasure.
Because no telltale game ends with one final answer they added the delayed stop of the glowing effect of the vault's tressure. It can indicate that they really did teleport. Maybe to another planet or just back out of the vault as they collected the tressure and the vault is "useless" so every living thing inside gets tp'ed back out. But maybe shortly after they collected whatever was inside the chest and got back out of the vault the chest stopped to glow. That's why one might thing they teleported but the moment during the white screen wasn't a second but some minutes.
