Can I play this game without having played Borderlands 2 or the Pre-Sequel?

I bought this game during the Humble Bundle, and I was wondering if I could play this and enjoy it (and most importantly, know what's going on) without having played 2 or the Pre-Sequel.

Its advisable to go back and play them as they're awesome games (especially 2 heck i would also recommend 1 which is my favourite) But no you could play it without the others you just wont know the side characters as much

I think you can play it, evil corporation versus planet of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ chasing legendary treasure is pretty easy to understand. Some of the jokes might go over your head, but some twists might be more surprising.
