Any% Normal Speedrun
Hello everyone,

like Ahra already said in the "Good news Everyone" Topic he's starting to speedrun Grandia II, so am I. This saturday I'll make my first run and I am going to stream it on Twitch.TV

I'd like to use this thread for strat discussions and ideas about pushing the run to a decent time.

Tonight I tested my time (casually with not giving it all I got) until Tongue of Valmar and have beaten it on 2:19:57.99. Ryudo died twice to Mareg and that was it. Also I had no Holy Ashes drop on the Gargoyls in the Tower which could have make it a bit faster.

So I'd be really happy if people actually talk about strats here and sure also I'd be happy to see some of you this saturday on my stream.

Best regards,
Jyntax.

No way Dude. :D

There is no single video on YT, not even Google gives you something if you search for a Grandia 2 speedrun.

I like the idea and was thinking about it too, but you can't speedrun this game.

If you just run through the areas without farming and leveling up, the bosses will ♥♥♥♥ you over and over again.

When it is your goal to beat the game in under let's say 20 hours or something like that. Okay.

But you won't be able to get times around 8 or 9 hours.

I wish you good luck.

Cheers.

You can speedrun any game. If you can't beat bosses without fighting normal enemies, it just means you need to figure out which normal enemies to fight. I figure a sub 10 hour time should be doable.

Not that I'm going to do it, I'm not really big on speedrunning... and when I do, it's definitely not long RPG's. But I'm pretty sure it's doable and I'd watch a speedrun for this game (although I wouldn't be able to watch it live).

There are Speedruns of games which take 10hours + Persona 4 as an example, or 100% FF8 ^^

Currently I'm guessing it'll take me around 10-13 hours on the first runs. ^^ I also finished my Hard-Mode run without actuall grinding. So I guess I'll be fine. I know for most parts of the game which spell deals the biggst amount of dmg. The only problem will be "Will I have the specific spell by then?". ^^

Thanks for your luck wishes. I'll need them. xD But no matter what I'll go for it. xD Just like elmagus did it with Grandia I. There are 3 segmented runs and he did a 13h RTA of it. :P

Yes but I think Grandia 2 is a game which can't be finished in under 18-20 hours.

I mean this game exists for 15 years.

If there is a good and legit way to speedrun it, why no one ever did it or figured it out?

I mean rly... Look it up on YT or Google...

There is absolutly nothing!
Jyntax Sep 2, 2015 @ 2:00pm
It took me 27 hours on Hard-Mode with reading every dialog, doing the secret stage, killing every enemy running into me, fighting the first 5 hours mostly without aoes and fighting the first 15 hours without the heavy op cancel skills like Tensaiken Slash. ^^ Ah and it was my first playthrough ever of Grandia II ^^

It is absolutly doable in under 15 hours and before elmagus there wasn't an RTA of Grandia I either. There are a lot of games which aren't speedrun yet because noone wanted to go for it yet. Just because noone went gor it before doesn't mean that it is uber long or difficult. ^^

Looking forward to seeing what people come up with. I'm especially interested in seeing the balance of strategy vs. grinding and where the SC/MC gets spent. Some amount of extra fighting will definitely be needed, but hopefully not too much.

Considering that Grandia 2 is easily finished by fighting every single enemy encounter only once. You will save at best 8 hours if you were to avoid at least 30% of the enemies. To cut in half is pretty damn tough because all those enemies you skip well, the time you lose comes at the boss battle. Magica Esoterica will be one of your best friends when you get to it. Also, don't forget to waste a good amount of your money buying items. Valmar's Eye is where you see how tough it gets. Valmar's Body is where the real fun starts. Now imagine all this, on hard mode.

Valmars Eye will be the first spot I tend to grind before. The goal will be chaos egg level 40. Then for body of Valmar I'll go with a lot of cancels from Tio since she got an AoE cancel, while the rest deals high dmg through skills and spells. I won't take down adds on boss fights if not needed.

So I got a few ideas how I can make it work. But if it does will be seen on saturday.

I'm considering how I would spend my skill and magic points in a speedrun. I think it would be best if I focused on one skill type for each character.

Ryudo: Tensaiken slash for cancels
Elena/millenia: white apocalypse, fallen wings
mareg- Lion King smash (main source of damage)
Roan- item spam, normal cancels

When Tio joins I'll focus primarilly on her lotus flower and then transition ryudo into Sky Dragon Slash

I would focus on spending my magic points on the chaos egg, and perhaps my skill books on str+ and lightning amplifiers.

Valmers eye minions should all go down to a level 3 WA/ FW + zapall.

Heyho,

i will be around for the run, and help you out where i can. My own preperations are still going to take a while, so i appreciate anyone who is willing to already do runs/share his strats live.

To give you guys pointers regarding what to expect time-wise, i currently kill Eye of Valmar around 3 1/2 hours. Less is possible, if i cut some grinding.

The full run will most likely take 12 hours in the beginning, but i expect to cut more time soon after the route is ready to get optimised.

I'll start a Speedrun until Tongue of Valmar at around 8pm my time which is in half an hour. It'll take me around 2:20 hours (at most I'd say). So if anyone wants to join in on that the link is in the very first post. ^^

You wanna race?

Edit: Nvm, i forgot that i had an appointment this evening. I'll just wait for another chance.^^

So just finished the run and got a 2:04:05 out of it. I assume there is here and there stuff to cut off even like 5 more minutes. I am really looking forward for saturday. :D

Almost all your survivability concerns are solved just by using 5 Runners. The dodge rate you get is insane.
Jyntax Sep 3, 2015 @ 2:43pm
Almost all? You mean all auto attacks right? Evasion doesn't help you against any channeled attack as far as I know and those are the only survivabillity concerns except for maybe Melfice and Valmars Body.

For Melfice I'll just go with Decoy + Toughness + Diggin and a few heals.

For Body of Valmar I'll go with Runner x5 and Spellbinding Eye to just make the tentacles harmless while I beat down the body.
