There are better alternatives. I initially supported the software but I started to dislike it after they seem to be working against modding and not providing the ability to create free characters.

I love Vocaloid and net characters but Desktop Mate feels like a cash-in by Infiniteloop on a culture I've held dear to my heart since a teen. I've wanted to show my support for awhile now but I draw a line when it's very aggressive to user-made content. I'm amazed that any entity decided to collaborate but I guess that's just them being a corporation at the end of the day. No hate towards anyone working with Infiniteloop at all, I just think this can be done way better that isn't aggressive to user experience.

Absolutely not worth it. Expensive DLC and no way to add your own custom characters. Find an alternative instead, like Desktop Kanojo.

Lack of mod support + better alternatives

I'ma be honest. I wasn't expecting the devs would really care about the modding community, as in they wouldn't acknowledge the modding community, but not really try to stop them. But as time has shown, they did care. A whole frickin bunch. Why is that? Here are two reasons why, explained from a official machine translation

1. Because mods enable users to get copies of DLCs from the seven seas.
   
2. Because they want money

Well for one, piracy is inevitable, but they don't usually take on the form of "mods", or in the very least, mods that people can easily find and download. But as a "repack" or "crack". I'm not gonna name any names because I don't snitch.

Second, they have "high-quality" models that easily beat those "free or $1 desktop pet programs" that people use. Well, if I'm gonna be honest, these models are probably no more than a 4-digit polygon count as evident on the first screenshot (look at the sleeves of miku), and detail is not really making up for these "high-quality models". Sure you could make up the argument that these characters would not take up a lot of screen space, so they shouldn't have to be so detailed, right? Fair point, but paying $15 for a SINGLE model is insane, look at sketchfabs models, you can find more highly detailed models that probably go for an even cheaper price! Oh yeah, most DLCs don't speak.

And recently they're adding Koharu Rikka to the list of DLCs you can buy, but this time with some exclusive voice packs! If we keep on the trend of $15 per DLC, we get something that's absolutely free via NicoNiSolid on TOKYO6's account, and we just get a voice pack as new content. A voicepack, that's probably 8 voice clips that are 5 seconds long or less, for $15.

In conclusion, if you have money, it's your choice how you wanna spend it. $15 on a 3d model that moves or $15 on a gacha game that probably would get you a 3d model that walks and talks, or a png. $15 on a 3d artist commission. $15 on a 3d model. $60 on 4-5 models that walk, but don't really talk. $60 for a AAA game from 2023. $60 on 3 indie games. $60 on Red Bull. $60 on olive garden. You get the point.

I'm finally am going to say it straight. This is a very bad thing to spend money on. Only people who have bought a license to WinRAR are the type of people to buy this thing with all the DLC. You may not be the type of person to buy WinRAR. I'm not the type of person to buy WinRAR. However there are alternatives. Such as a different software or... you could just... you know.

Not a modder and didn't intend on modding this application but just saw yet another ad for another overpriced as heck dlc for this very simple, very feature lacking app and I have absolutely lost interest with this bs entirely now.

There is a paid alternative to this app with more features, mod support and actual substantial updates available on Steam for less than €5....yes... the entire app is less a quarter of the price of one skin in this one.

I found it very suspicious how this app barely existed a week before advertising paid, collabs. It is clear this dev saw a good concept, made it work on steam to get people in the door and then tried to absolutely milk the community for every cent while not maintaining the app at all and actively removing features that allow users to mod the app (because they wont buy dlc then).

To absolutely prove the devs greed, they posted a community update stating that they will finally start listening to user feedback (most likely because a rival app is now being reviewed way better) and followed that by uploading a post about yet another overpriced dlc, that says it all.
