Desktop Mate

Desktop Mate

Why is this free? What's the catch?
So, is the only catch the paid DLC or is this going to steel all my credit cards and passwords?

Probably there so people try it out and to get people to buy Miku

Im also wondering about this, its a redflag for me, who the hell knows what data it collects and who it sells it to
maybe cuz there is no future in it right now ? i mean its just some animation on your desktop no talk, no interaction, nothing more then just a alarm app with some animation

>Advertise miku throughout banner images and store page
>No miku unless you pay for Miku DLC

Seems reasonable, if it had no Miku at all and was completely free from the get go I'd be more suspicious.

Good thing it's free. It does not even boot after download.
Yeah, I have trust issues on this, especially being 'free' - it must be collecting data, and I would like an audit of what I would be giving up.
Being on the Internet in general collects data since your on internet your already flagged so its all luck at this point if your gonna get smacked by a stranger online. you've taken the biggest risk by being online already. and Everyone uses the internet for daily use so that's the best way to look at it, i ended up getting it and am thoroughly enjoying it, its similar to the Shimeji but more higher quality. :D just figured I'd say that.

As far as I was able to find out, DesktopMate doesn't communicate with any kind of remote server, other than the usual that Steam shares (how many users, hours played, etc.). The Miku DLC is an official Crypton product, too.

There's nothing to it. It's just there to get you to buy a $15 Miku (or more, depending on your region). It's overpriced but it has the merit of being straightforward.
Because it's just a desktop decoration that does a few repetitive motions? It's cute, but I got tired of it quickly.
i understand the paranoia but its misplaced. its a silly little desktop decoration and if there was a cryptominer or whatever someone wouldve sounded the alarm already
Yeah, reading the task manager, it doesn't hog the machine that much, even lower than Wallpaper Engine (Depending on the wallpaper). So for now it's safe, I just haven't check any background process that it takes, but it doesn't ask for UAC so I THINK, its fine for now.
The catch is that there's only one character out of the box and to get the other character you need to buy DLC, oh and don't forget how those two are the only official characters meaning the only way to get more characters is by modding.
scares me a bit lol. Reminds me of bonzi buddy. Seriously though i would like to know if it is collecting data and what data it is collecting. is it keeping track of keys, files, hardware, ect.
would be interesting to hear from devs.

Jsut coming from a person who usually takes that extra step for security and anonymity (as much as one can without being over the top).:caitChug:
do you people not play F2P games? the fear some of you have of anything free on steam is pretty hilarious

Thinking the same here, lol.. All the commenters must have been American or something, because no normal person is that paranoid.
