The closest thing would be Shimejis, they are also desktop buddies but unlike those in Deskmate can multiply on their own when left alone for a while and you can have different kind of Shimeji, those models are found on Pixiv. I myself own some Yugioh 5D´s Shimejis (all that I have collected and have been released on this site) I think you also need Javascript to have the program running. Edit because I forgor: yes it´s for Free

No Steam required. They also can be attached to your file windows and anything that isn´t exactly in full screen. The problaby only other downside of these that they don´t make sounds or dance, all they can do is run around on your desktop, can be picked up, sometimes can climb on your open window, (also problaby can climb on your programs that you use too but I forgot lol), they can pick up your window too and carry it off screen. You can also make them multiply without waiting if you want a few. The other positive is that if you have multiple Shimeji models you can have those them up all at the same time. For example you have let´s say a Miku one and then you want a different one like Kesane Teto.

Even a different model can run multiply on it´s own too so you may try to have some kind of control if your PC can´t handle multiple images at once. Unfortunally different models can´t interact with one another.

Uhm I guess that´s about it from what I still remember and they have been around for 10+ years. Hope that helps c:

Did anyone try Digital Mate? I want to find some advice before getting it
Amarillo's Desktop Pets look out for it, a demo is releasing in a week

Vpet-Simulator (I know you said off steam but it is better than this and has workshop support)

Desktop Kanojo is a pretty good replacement. It's a couple bucks but it has steam workshop AND local model support. The only downside is that it doesn't let you scale up/down the characters. If you do start it just remember it uses VRM 0.0 models not VRM 1.0 like the mods for this game used.

Might actually just switch to this one.
What I want is a Desktop Mate that is semi-A.I and not just a model that sits on the screen and barely does anything.. I want random behaviours and random interaction. The ability to set their personality like Cute and Helpful or Mischief and Needy.. Or even give it a Voice Module to talk and I can say things instead of clicking it to do something..

Not just a thing that sits on the screen with almost zero programming outside of a few presets..

Voxy will suit you perfectly, if you have spare money.
