Make Movie -> Save it to my hard drive -> Advanced options -> Sony AVC/MVC -> Internet 1920x1080-30p.
What happens? Do you see any error report at all?
*EDIT* Ok, no problems so far. I believe the steps you provided solved my issue so far.
unfortunately i have a similar issue: Movie Studio crashes when i hit the Advanced Options button.
I have searched the internet for similar errors, but did not find anything useful. I have tried the following in order, but no luck:
- Turning on or off the NVidia acceleration in the Preferences
- Updating NVidia drivers
- Holding ctrl-shift while starting, and cleaning local data
- Installing from the steamapps folder's vmspe130_x64.exe
- Repairing .NET 4.5.1
- Installing .NET 4.5.2
- Repairing Visual C++ 2012 redistributable
- Deleting local steam content
- Uninstalling all Sony Movie Studio related software from Control panel
- Restarting computer
- Reinstalling from Steam
- Starting a fresh install, namely:
+ - Starting Movie Studio Platinum 13.0 (64-bit) from the Start menu gets an error: "An error occurred starting Movie Studio Platnium - Steam Powered. The reason for the error could not be determined." - is that normal?
+ - Starting Movie Studio 13 Platinum - Steam Powered from the Start menu - it starts fine.
+ - Starting Movie Studio from Steam - it starts fine.
- Dismissing the welcome screen
- Dismissing the tutorial
- Making no changes in the default Welcome.vf, hitting Make Movie
- Selecting Save it to my hard drive
- (Choosing any of the file formats does not matter)
- Clicking on the Advanced options button crashes Movie Studio 13 right away
Expanding the problem report dialog reveals the following details:
Problem Description
Application Name: Movie Studio Platinum - Steam Powered

I have checked the log files, but everything seems to be fine, except these four:
- OCIO Exception during initialization: Error could not read 'D:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\MovieStudioPlatinum130\Movie Studio Platinum 13.0\OpenColorIO\configs\aces\config_1_0_3.ocio' OCIO profile.
- ERROR Sony.MediaSoftware.VideoEffectsUI.Controller [(null)] - Error in style setting 'cursor-color:Vegas.ButtonHightlight'
- ERROR Sony.MediaSoftware.VideoEffectsUI.Controller [(null)] - Error in style setting 'background-color:Vegas.ButtonFace50'
- ERROR Sony.MediaSoftware.VideoEffectsUI.Controller [(null)] - Error in style setting 'background-color:Vegas.ButtonFace50'
Rendering files without tweaking settings goes just fine usually.
Please help me to fix this issue as i am eager to use this fine piece of software. :)
Thank you very much,
BuXY
One thing I see in your error report is that you have Movie Studio installed to your D drive. While you're welcome to try to run the software in any configuration you wish, we only support installing to the system drive (C drive, usually). The first thing I'd suggest here is to install to your C drive to see if doing so resolves the issue.
If it does, you're set. If not, write back and we'll look into it further.
ETA: Yes, it's normal to get an error message when trying to launch the Steam version of the software from outside Steam. You need to launch the Steam version from the Steam Library, or from a Steam desktop or Start menu shortcut. Taskbar shortcuts or shortcuts which point straight to the EXE won't work.
Good news: no crash happened! :)
Bad news: i got en error message: "An error occurred while creating the media file. The reason for the error could not be determined." for the first time. (The selection was the default WMV option, and i do not have any WMV-creating related software installed.)
More good news: trying for second time, the Render as dialog appeared, and as far as i can tell, it is working now. I have successfully rendered the welcome project.
Thank you for your kind help and your extremely quick response. What a "stupid" error cause. If it is possible, please do some testing with installations on drives other than C: and improve your software. (For now, i can live with this setup.)
I'm glad your issue appears to be resolved. Regarding the system drive requirement, Movie Studio routinely calls a wide range of system-level functions and native Windows operations. It isn't a mostly self-contained executable like many games.
While it's certainly possible to call these functions from other drives and some users have success with that type of setup, the first troubleshooting measure when there's a problem is to remove variables and reduce complexity by giving the software easier, simpler access to the system resources it needs.
I have tried to fire up the welcome.vf project again as it has worked before, but it crashed also.
Hm, what else have been changed? I didn't do anything for 23 hours. The PC went to sleep for sure. Maybe there was some DVB-C recording in the background yesterday. So i did a clean restart of my system, with no luck.
Long story short, after an enermous amount of mouse clicks, i've found the remedy against my torture (it is more like a workaround):
On the Make Movie - Save to Hard Drive dialog:
- click any of the format radio buttons
- click on the browse button
+- dismiss the folder browsing dialog (may press the escape key too)
- click the advanced options button
If i miss out any of these, the program will crash. If i switch to another task with alt-tab between the steps, it won't work. The order of the first two steps may be swapped. Anyway, after this first try, i will always get an error message (see my previous post) but no crash. After this, i can come back to this dialog, and can click wherever i want, but the advanced options dialog will appear like a charm.
Now that's a weird one. (Imagine that, if i forget to save my project before rendering, and miss some of the steps above, i could just simply lose all or some of my work!) I believe that with this metod above, the same results could be achieved with the software installed to drive D:.
I'd like to ask you to please investigate this matter further. I am more than willing to cooperate in the process of diagnostic/testing. Thank you in advance.
