Anyways, look for where your movie file was saved. If you rename the .tmp over to .mp4 or a .avi, can you then play it as a movie file? If not, rename it back with the .tmp extension and maybe the actual movie file is stored at another location / folder in your hard drive?
Strange that Windows Media Player would change the format, unless you somehow did a convert or save as option with it? I rarely use Window Media Player, so I'm not really familiar with it so much. Did it somehow open up into Windows Movie Maker instead and was converted, as I think TMP files are also a temp file created when editing or working with Windows Movie Maker.
If so, then try loading the TMP file into Windows Movie Maker, then export it, or Save as, a video file (you might have options from a drop-down menu to choose the format, such as .wmv, .mpeg or .mov).
Good luck.
HOLY COW, IT WORKED! THANKS A MILLION!
