ONLINE CO-OP GUIDE - ABOUT PROGRESS, HINTS, EXPLANATIONS!

HERE IS A GUIDE ON HOW TO CONNECT TO A FRIEND TO PLAY ONLINE CO-OP AND A BUNCH OF INFORMATION ABOUT HOW YOU BOTH PROGRESS IN THE GAME

• Important notice: Online can only be played with friends on your Steam friends list. There is not open lobby and/or matchmaking.

• In order to initiate an online session the host player needs to have the initial tutorial completed (15 minutes on average). Once the House is reached, the host player can invite their friend to an online session.
  
  
• The save is initially stored on the host's side but it can be copied by the guest player through the slots menu. Once the online session has ended, the guest player can enter story mode and select little cogwheel icon on the right of a slot and select "Copy online save" option.

• All the upgrades in the House are being bought by the host player but effects applied to both, host and guest player. After the session has ended and guest player decides to play on their own with the current online save, they can always copy the save with all the upgrades made in online and continue the playthrough.
  
  

  Paws and Claws DLC in the Co-Op play:

  
  
• If a Host has Paws and Claws DLC and the Guest does not, then the Host can pick up treats and the guest does not see them at all. The boosts purchased using treats are given to both the Host and the Guest.
  
• If both, the Host and Guest have the Paws and Claws DLC, the same thing happens as in the first point. Only the Host sees the treats and can purchase the boosts but the boosts are given to both the Host and the Guest.
  
• If the Host does not have the Paws and Claws DLC but the Guest does, then both the Host and the Guest do not see the treats and cannot purchase the boosts given by the treats.
  
  

  Ancient Spirits DLC in the Co-Op play:

• If the Host has the Ancient Spirits DLC and the Guest does not, still both the Host and the Guest can see and can play with the DLC character.
  
• If the Host does not have the Ancient Spirits DLC but the Guest does then both of them cannot play with the DLC character.

Would be great if there was an actual matchmaking system, where you could pair with random players online instead of being invite-only.

After starting a game and getting to the house I can't get a game going with my friend.
I invite them and they get the invitation and accept.

On their screen it says to wait for me to accept them joining but sometimes there's no pop-up on my game. Other times there is a pop-up but despite accepting they can't join me and their game just times out waiting and then boots them to the main menu.

We've tried for over 30 minutes and can't get coop to work at all.

Really? Not even a 'make invite link' or anything of the sort to facilitate coop play without getting your friendlist filled with strangers?

Was hoping to play the game with my friend with me on windows and him using steam so I didnt have to pay for the game again :(

Interesting. I actually hadn't thought to do that yet, we've been just following the steps and both starting up the game and choosing a save first (and some times with the person being invited not choosing but choosing the story mode),

So far we haven't been able to make it work but I'll give this a shot later and see if it works. I appreciate the suggestion!

Nope it didn't work. Even tried using a different input in case it was causing a conflict if we both used keyboard and mouse and nothing. Same issue.

It pops up for me to accept the invite but on her screen it just says waiting for me to accept and then it times out.

My friend just bought the game because we're constantly on a search for cool co-op experiences and I love this one single player, so it was super exciting to see that we could finally play this one together.

We have no issues with connecting to eachother, the problem arises afterwards where we're both stuck on the save slot retrieval. For me, I get a message on screen that says "Waiting for the guest player to fetch save data" and she's stuck on "Fetching host's save slot" and it doesn't move. We've both gone through the tutorial section and were at the house but now it seems to just be frozen.

Any tips? We ended up having to alt-F4 to get out of the game because it wasn't moving after 15 minutes.


Edit: Just to add, we both have both DLCs if that makes any difference.

had the same problem with my friend. i can only access steam through vpn, so our guess was that the vpn was the reason. i changed it to another and now we're enjoying the game together. idk if it'll help you, but it's better to try

Interesting situation. That might help someone else, but we don't use VPNs during gaming sessions so that bit of advice unfortunately won't help us. Thanks for responding though :)

As a follow-up question, where is she supposed to be in the game? (we tried again)

If I'm inviting from the house...we've tried with her also being at the house too on her end, we also tried with her being at the menu just after the "Press Any Key" screen.

The game doesn't freeze since the animations of the family members in the house are still going. It just doesn't seem to be fetching the save data. Another interesting point, if I alt-F4 out of the game while she's still waiting, it'll tell her that I ended the session.

We also tried with having her send me the invite with the same result.
