Character choice
I've been wondering if there is a point in trying to play with the other characters or just focus on leveling up with only one of them, because as I progress and characters unlock the dungeons seem extremely overwhelming if I decide to try with someone new. Is there a point to picking someone different, story-wise, or it is just a grinding matter and trying a different style of combat?

My initial thought or as I imagined it would be with so many characters to play, was that I could probably just play every level with a different char and level them up equally and at the same time uncover more story bits which you would not if you'd only play with one character...but as it is right now it seems pointless or I'm just missing the point.

At some point you'll need to change characters anyway.
Since all upgrades are family shared picking someone fresh doesn't handicap you.
They'll level up super fast if you bring them at your latest dungeon.

The point of playing other characters is that as they progress through their skill tree, they unlock bonuses that will apply to any of the characters that you will play as. It's actually a good idea to level all of them together, assuming you don't mind redoing dungeons with new characters. I enjoy playing with most of them except John anyway, so... hahahahaha.

Also, some bosses are easier to beat with certain characters. Like beating Anai-Dya's Stone Protector with Kevin, for example.

I see, so it's sorta required to have those family bonuses in order to withstand the later dungeons, right?

Required? Not necessarily. Useful? Yeah. The later dungeons will be much easier if you have the family buffing passives.

It's good to have but you don't need to, put all my cash into mama's book. Still manage to finish the game with like 5 points into attack and 3 to health so... yeah.

Cool. Thank you for the answers.

The story line moves forward automatically and unlocks them as you progress. They also help you in the story line later on so they need to be unlocked and you do not get to choose who to unlock first. It goes Older daughter, young son, melee son, then Lucy. I saved the dog but have yet to unlock another character in story mode.

Yes, you NEED to level up the other characters too if you want to utilize them.
