So about more advanced unit types
I haven't played in a while and since this game now has a full release, I thought I'd jump back in again.

One thing I've noticed: Has anything about recruitment changed? I used to get a ton of Orc and Ogre recruits back in beta, but now all I get offered is a bunch of Goblins and very rarely an Orc Shaman or Harpy. I already have training rooms built, Luxury is high and all that.

Did the requirements change somehow? Do I have to go discover them first or something? No need to throw around full-on spoilers, a small hint would be sufficient.

Orcs and ogres don't exist any more. The evil keepers make do with goblins now, and the Goblin King keeper has access to trolls at some point. The meta shifted a bit more towards quality equipment over finding "superior" units. Those goblins can be quite fierce once you start producing adamantine equipment.

That said, some of the keepers let you capture and convert enemy units, so you can go Elite Unit hunting if you want, it's still worth it to build your cyclopian guard unit.

In full version it's more shifted towards capturing enemy units and converting them. You don't get those units through recruitment anymore.

In my opinion a good change, since i have never really dealt with prisoners before, now you kinda have to :)

My question is what are the chance of converting enemy unit is it 100% chance? Can you capture and convert bosses like hydra and others?

It is not 100% chance to convert.

The game is very different from pre-1.0. Not the same game anymore.

had a taste of the prisoner converting system, from 15 captured prisoners only 1 join me. So super BS system as I try to capture the strong and unique units only, they just die at the end.

I'm not happy with the changes either.

I'm currently playing a Goblin keeper and ran some quick tests [via savescum] with regards to prisoners and converting. I captured 15 prisoners of the same unit type (all identical dwarf) and only 4 of them converted. I reloaded 4 times and the exact same 4 converted every time. I tried waited a few hours of gameplay before I tried again - and I also tried whipping them first to apply the 'Happy' status but it didn't change anything.

I then tried converting a single unit by loading the game (many times) before even ordering-capture/capturing. This confirmed that the chance-to-convert is baked into the unit. Although I'm not sure if it's from inception, but it's definitely decided before capturing the unit.

I should have kept a record of all prisoner-converting but I'm 90% sure it's not a 50% chance anymore (even though the IN-GAME documentation under the "?" menu CURRENTLY says it is...) or maybe I just have very poor luck.

edits: changed "recruit" to "convert" for clarity/consistency with the game's documentation

4 out of 15 might as well be 50% since its very low sample size. Try out 100 then it should look more like 45/55 but i guess 70/30 would still be possible even with that sample size

That test was more to see if the chance-to-convert was decided at the torture table, upon recruiting the prisoner to your base (after capturing and returning), upon capture (at the remote location), upon discovery (first visiting the location), or at world gen. It appears it's either at discovery or world gen.

When I mentioned the 50% conversion being inaccurate, that was more based on my entire game so far and my (albeit poor) memory. I've had probably 70-80 prisoners total but I didn't record the conversions. I have 32 prisoners currently. I'll go find 20-30 more and try to convert them all and see how that goes! (and I'll log it and report back)

Devs posted that the conversion is set in stone, so if it failed once it will fail every time. Even reload from a save will not help.
About units I'm very worried as some unique units are on 1 on the map. And 90% of time in my last 20 games I failed convert units like cyclop and others.

I've searched far and wide (here and Reddit) for info on this from the devs - Thanks so much for settling that!! I'll still report my prisoner conversion stats in a bit. "Goblin war band assemble!"

Well this need a mod as I want to collect some of the unique units in game, but I fail to convert them.
