Archers & walls with arrow slits

Do they work properly?

I had long corridor with wall with arrow slits at the end. Behind the wall was a room designated as guard zone with archers. Archers were hanging there just fine. But when an enemy approached, they didn't shoot. Instead they rushed out of the room and towards the gates blocking the enemy in the corridor so they'd get shot through the wall.

So they obviously saw the enemy through the slits, but didn't shoot through the arrow slits as intended. Yes, they actually had bows.
