If they are insane they get their own personal workspace/apartment combo and don't need a zone - they're behind a locked door anyway. You want your crafters happy so they make enchanted gear faster.
The barn or barracks are either for separating combat animals from the mounts, or used as a front line barracks close to the base defenses. Less time spent for the guards to walk from bed to the leisure zone to the guard spots.
