Long story short, dig down. When you find a z-level filled with killer squid your goal is to find and recover your matrons without feeding them to the calamari. I saw five kraken last time I did this, if you're lucky you might only see one or two. Best of luck, this is a tough fight!
*Normally I would use a spoiler warning for a post like this, or be vague to save the experience... but not telling someone they're about to face *multiple* kraken seems really mean.
Option A) Death to the squid - Aim for the head, they can spawn infinite tentacles. You can throw hundreds of minions at them while workers fill the water area with bridges until you can kill the head(s).
Alternatively during your recruitment process keep an eye out for Swimming harpies. A squad of these can shoot the head while grabbed without drowning.
Option B) Build a safety tunnel. With enough disposable bodies and stone you can fill in the water and build walls to create a safe tunnel to breach the Matron vault and get them out.
Option C) Note the location of the Matron Vault's position. Build stairs a level up so you descend into the vault itself and bypass the kraken.
While option A is the most fun, Option B is the most challenging. Option C is cheese, and really only works now with the addition of multiple stairs per level actually being linked to their gps position. Stairs used to be one per level and came out in a central area.
You're very welcome. Best of luck, and be sure to let me know how it turns out later, whether you get the matrons back or called it quits from attrition.
UGH!
I know, it's a filthy strategy. I'd only use it as a failsafe myself, after throwing all my resources and minions at the kraken first. If I can't beat them I don't deserve the matrons.
