Game crashes whenever I plug a controller in
I've tried multiple controllers: Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox one, and PS4.
I tried them all out with other games and it only crashes with lost world.

Any help would be great, thanks in advance.

I have the exact same issue. Somehow, I was able to play with a controller after it kept crashing, but when my controller got accidentally unplugged and plugged back in it crashed. I saw this post and decided to see if the controller was causing the crashes, and sure enough it was. If you find a fix I'd love to know

Do you guys have any other USB devices plugged into your PC... a Printer, USB memory stick, network adapter, etc.?

I've seen this issue with some games before. Essentially what happens is that the game picks up one of your *other* USB devices and tries to use it as a controller. Obviously, this interferes with actual controller operation. Since the game doesn't know what to do, it crashes.

Try powering your PC down completely and disconnect any USB devices other than mouse and keyboard. Start the game up and affirm that it runs correctly. If it does, exit the game and plug in your controller of choice. Restart the game. If it runs correctly with the controller, shut the game down and plug in another USB device (controller still connected) and see if the game crashes. What you're trying to do here is isolate the USB device(s) that is actually causing the crash.

Once you've discovered the offending device, you may be able to source updated drivers for it to (hopefully) prevent future crashes with it plugged in. Otherwise, you'll simply have to not have that device connected when you play.

Hope this helps.

Dude, thank you so much. It turned out the crashing was caused by my Mayflash Dolphin Bar which allows you to use a Wii remote on PC.

Does the laptop have a touch screen or virtual (i.e.; on-screen) keyboard? If so, what happens when you disable that functionality and retry the game?

What software are you using to get the controllers working on your laptop? Have you tried an Xbox 360 controller with the default "out of the box" drivers that Microsoft provides?

Are the controllers you're trying wired or are they connected wirelessly?

My laptop actually does have a touch scrren. Disabled and tried it again.
Sadly didn't work

And I tried the following controllers: Xbox 360 (Default drivers and cables), Xbox One, PS4 (With DS4Windows), and PS3 (With DS3Tool)

Thinking about this a little more... could the problem be an issue with the number of controller "drivers" currently installed (or perhaps, running) on the system? Meaning, could DS4Windows somehow be conflicting with DS3Tool and/or the Xbox 360 / One controller drivers?

To test this theory, my next step would be to remove everything controller related from the system and start fresh:

1. Start by uninstalling everything controller related on the system... the aforementioned DS4Windows, DS3Tool, et. al. Afterwards, reboot even if you are not prompted to.

2. Next, remove any folders/files these tools/drivers left behind using Windows Explorer.

3. Then, download/run a utility like CCleaner to get rid of any registry entries that the controller software may have created and then subsequently left behind. Reboot.

4. Finally, source the latest DirectX runtime and install it. This may be located in the Sonic Lost World folder under a "redist" folder or similar. It can also be downloaded directly from the Microsoft website. Reboot.

5. Once the system is back up, connect the Xbox 360 controller and perform a Windows Update. If there are any critical, recommended, or important updates regarding the Xbox 360 controller, install them. Reboot even if you are not prompted to do so.

When the system comes back up, affirm the Xbox 360 controller is plugged in and give it another try.

Decided to try this and even that didn't work.
So...I'm not exactly sure what to do at this point, if you think of anything else please let me know and thanks for all the help so far.

I'm running out of ideas myself actually...

Not sure if you tried this already, but can you try plugging the wired Xbox 360 controller into a different USB port and give it another go? I've had USB devices be finnicky about which port they're plugged into before.
