Happens to me as well. I boot up the game and it crashes from the start. It's not your specs. My pc is a beast and this happens to me. I also have the issue where my wireless XBOX ONE controller won't work with the game at all. Sometimes when I boot up Steam these problems don't occur at all, but when they do it is a nightmare. The only thing I could have done to cause this was mod the game to have Anti-Aliasing. I'll try undoing that mod and see if there is any progress.
Sucks to be you then.

That's the laziest answer ever...

Here're my advices:
- If you are using above 60hz Refresh Rate, lower it to 60hz. Some games does not react well with high Refresh Rate or may only work well for the first few times.
- Disable Steam Cloud. I heard every now and then that Steam Cloud is a massive troublemaker. And, if you don't need to move computers or something, there's no need to use the Cloud.
- Test wired controllers. Wireless controllers are infamous for sudden connectivity issues in general. If the issue does not persist with wired controllers, then it is certainly your Wireless Controller causing problems.
- Avoid mods unless they are up-to-date and are not known to cause issues. It is not uncommon for mods to cause issues to games and often is the lead for a misunderstanding.
