How to use the drill?

So, I know this will sound strange, but I cannot figure out how to use the drill in the side scrolling mode with the keyboard. I know it's supposed to have the same controls as Sonic Colors, but no matter what I do I cannot find any way to control the drill. I know the drill isn't supposed to have complex controls, but is there a setting I need to turn on to fix the drill somehow? I'm not sure what to do about it. I'll press my right and left keys, my up and down keys, my run key, and Sonic just seems goes in random directions. What are the controls? If you do reply, make sure to be clear about what your saying.

I think you have to hold that button. Takes some getting used to. You go slower by not pressing the run button.

Yeah, I think it might be something like that. I started to get a little control, but I'm still not very good at it though. The drill just seems to go in a straight line, and then if I touch and of my movement keys, it just does several loops and then get stuck on a wall and keeps banging into it.
