Edit: Having now taken a look at them, it appears that they are specifically meant for just supporting plants.
Out of curiosity, what else were you hoping/thinking it would/could do?
On the topic of growing plants, it may need some work. I had a design earlier today that literally would rip itself apart (though I had created an enclosed space with inward pointing self-seed launchers). I hope manylegged keeps following this line of development and add/enables similar biome alteration abilities for other factions.
2nded on the ship ripping apart when seeds hit your ship.
Lol that collision damage. Maybe the seeds shouldn't have any?

I made a inclosed farming ship and it exploaded like a popcorn kernal. Hilariously.
I also spent half an hour looking for yellow plant seeds to grown on my ship, not knowing they dont make seeds.
