you can build your ship(s), send it to someone and have them run a tournament. The AI will fight the ships to the best of its ability, and its quite fun when you get deep into it. join the reassembly discord (there's a discussion on this page that gives out the link) to get information on the latest tournaments; I highly recommend submitting to a large one, but exchanging ships between two people is easy and is still quite fun.
A multiplayer mode that you are likely wondering about is not coming, and it would require a rewrite of the game entirely, sadly.
That's what they said about skyrim, and modders made it happen. If the game creator allows people to edit the game on an even deeper level I am sure a dedicated modder would achieve such a feat.
