...I would assume so.
I'm not exactly sure how the uh, "The Contestants" or whatever they are, propagate, but if you simply clear factory wielding and other more dangerous units out of sectors, and drop an outpost that can spawn factory holding units every few squares, that would likely deal with most of the map.
Of course, the more frequently of such an outpost you spawn, the faster you'd likely succeed in your goal...
Also, if your outpost has R generation (Tinkrell or Farmer), it would likely be even faster.
Basically, you could probably clear out the entire map yourself, or you could only spawn things to do it for you, or somewhere inbetween.
This seems to happen if there are no enemies or resources lying around to play with, kind of like the starting zones.
Honestly, you might have more luck being the resource generator and just spawning offense focused weapon platforms to vaporize sectors for you...
But make no mistake, that regardless of how you plan to do it, your endeavor will be "tedious".
