SpyParty

Is the game dead?
I know that there is the playerbase that will always come back, the regulars, but I have a few questions.

A: Does the game actually get new players? a lot of people complain about the price and decide not to get it.
B: Are there plans for more updates? I've seen a few times that the update is "just a few weeks away" and "will be done in February" or some other time, but it's been so long without anything new. It almost feels like the dev is trying to keep hype up for those still looking at/playing the game but hasn't delivered.

I have played the game before (refunded but wanting to play again), and have watched many hours of the tournaments on the SpyParty youtube channel, but even there I see mostly the same people in the leagues. If I recall correctly, the daily challenges (sniper challenges) are just on repeat, too.

yeah, low 20s to high 40s peak player base per day, 5 minute queues mentioned in a lot of reviews and community posts, complaints of high and unreasonable price, and a self proclaimed very slow developer, not to sound like an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but until he gets some very much needed developmental work done, this game will struggle, goof game with a lot of potential in due time.

I'd suggest joining the SpyParty discord, which is where most of the daily community stuff happens: http://discord.gg/spyparty

It has been way too long between updates, something I hope to fix soon, but the community is still active and welcoming and running casts and tournaments and whatnot.

Yeah. Pretty much dead unfortunately. It's been in the early access for 4 years and the price is a joke. Maybe some one else will make a similar game at some point.

I have a list of similar games I keep mostly up to date on the blog FAQ, here you go! http://spyparty.com/similar I have a few more to add from the past year or so.

Yes. Nobody is playing it. https://steamdb.info/app/329070/graphs/ Max 20 people playing at any one time, and that's being generous
It's been like almost a year and a half or more since the last update. Is the developer truly working on the game? This is one of my classic games that I like looking at every once in a while but there's no press, no updates. Still no sale either, so anyone who wants to play, even without the game in production it seems, has to pay a good bit.

Is checker truly working on the game? No, he is the new President of France and very busy.
One man.
No press? Would you rather he spend time writing a press release or coding the game?
Breathe.

I appreciate the response, although I do not believe you have sufficiently alleviated my concerns. Have you seen any progress yourself, as an owner of the game? I would assume you'd know better than I if there has been progress. I have been watching the SCL Summer cup recently but even then don't really see much that has changed since 2021 or so.
I have seen in the tune of John Coltrane, GIANT STEPS.
The characters were blockheads and a total of 4(?)maps.
The art has changed dramatically.
The maps are plentiful and varied.

New missions have been added.
The tutorial. When I bought the game I printed out maybe 6 pages of instructions.
"Tells" was like a paragraph long.

When I bought the game it was the community that taught and inspired (along with checker, I still marvel at his one man show).

Like wine...
I bought the game nine years ago, December (funny how that stuck in my head). And I have seen the promised land!

Ack, sorry, didn't check Steam forums for a while! It's not dead, although it has been embarrassingly long since the last update, which I will hopefully rectify shortly!

At least I'm consistent!

I'm an old enough gamer to be confused by the notion of "dead game". That is, I used to buy and play games that didn't require to be "alive" - they were shipped, they could exceptionally get an obscure patch at some point, but they were generally their own complete thing, like a vase, a book, a car.

So, I get Spy Party has ceased being updated or upgraded. But in reality, is that an issue ? Are there shortcomings that still need addressing, bugs, missing content, a feel of incompletion ? Or can this game be considered as "considered dead because simply finished" ?

It's a multiplayer game that no one plays, hence dead
I observed several matches today?
