it not too confusing since you start as a new character (Nero) anyway
i do recommend playing 1 and 3 if you can find them later
the time line of the games is 3,1,4,2
DmC: devil may cry is a reboot and not canon with 1,2,3 and 4
2 is considerd the worst game but its not that bad IMO worth playing once
i like 1 3 and 4 all equally
playing 3 will make you allot better at playing as Dante
since in 4 all of his moves will be a little overwelming at first for new players
so basicly your cool starting with this one
the games don't really reference each other too much
but playing them all will make you appreciate certain details
-DMC1 is obviously the first game of the series, though a bit dated to today's standard.
-DMC3 is the first game, chronologically speaking, and is considered by many the best game in the series overall. A little warning though, the PC port sucks, but there are mods that can make it worthwhile and if your gig is up to par, you wont have much issues besides the initial setup.
-DMC4 contains a new main protagonist, Nero, but you still have access to the old main protagonist Dante. Knowing about the previous games doesn't really matter as much, a few references here and there.
DMC3 or DMC4 are my recommended options. DMC2 is horrible, and DmC:DmC (the reboot) is a controversial entry to the series that basically split the fanbase in two, for very good reason. You can choose to play that game, but I'd advise against it.
Thing to note is that these games are pure gameplay, everything comes in second.
And i would say the reboot is the best entry with 3
