He is the fastest character and has a bunch of tools to work with.
I'd say he has more to offer than anyone else (except Dante), he just plays differently.
It's just a matter of discovering and engaging like with every other character.
Vergil's state is similar to Dante's when DMC4 was new. Nobody knew how to play or utilize him, but things started progressing and some guys opened the masses' eyes to his potential.
- You should be using your B teleport to cancel long recovery animations. Make sure you have a sword stuck in at least one enemy at all times.
- Learn how to use Just Judgment Cut. It's really important for keeping his damage up if you're not at max concentration.
- Learn to stay at max concentration. Vergil is VERY fast... he's just got a different pacing than Dante or Nero, where you want to be dishing out damage constantly.
- Teleport is OP. It gives you on-demand invulnerability frames, provided you can get the timing down. There are some attacks I still have trouble dodging, but B is always a potential answer.
- It's hard to double jump in-combat, but if you need double jump in platforming segments press B without lock on. Trick Up is essentially his Air Hike, just like in DMC3:SE.
Here's a combo you can't really go wrong with, unless you're not just paying any attention to the screen:
Rapid Slash > Rising Star (Hold Y to turn Rapid Slash into a launcher) > Aerial Rave B > Just Judgment Cut > Lunar Phase > Helm Breaker.
Vergil is strange at first because he plays so much differently from all the other characters. You have to be calm and methodical; he won't forgive constant button-mashing. (Unless it's B.)
If you need more concentration just go stand next to a few enemies; it'll fill your gauge in no time.
Second stick to using just charged judgement cut during combos. you can even charge it after a slash -> teleport.
I'm not the best with him either yet but I realize that's my own shortcomings rather than his.
Although I do wish trick down wasn't limited to devil trigger.
Dodging some attacks by abusing tele is actually more difficult.
Boom. You now know how to play Vergil.
Charge Beast Uppercut up to level 3 (lv 3 can only be accessed with FULL concentration), and try to distort it (similar to Dante's Distorted Real Impact) ...it's easily the most powerful technique in the game, even surpassed Dante's Distorted Real Impact
If you are in a pinch just Devil Trigger and evade all enemies easily, easy Table Hopper
