Do you have to play as Nero?
So I'm thinking of getting this as my first DMC game. (I would get DMC3 but I hear it's a bad port) and I was wondering if playing Nero first is necessary to unlock the other characters and play as them. I've seen the cutscenes for this game a few years ago, and decided I have an irrational hatred for Nero as a character, and a rather rational one for Kyrie (I think most people could agree to that, atleast.) However, I love everyone else. So I was wondering if I'd be able to start a new game with any character right off the bat, or do I have to play through it with Nero first?

you can start as Nero Lady or Vergil

when you get to mission 12 as Nero you switch to Dante
when you get to mission 12 as Lady you switch to trish
and you can just be Vergil threw the whole game

IMO Nero isn't that bad maybe you'll change your mind about him this time
and if not you can just skip his cutscenes
he's gameplay is still great

Nero isn't THAT bad. However, compared to the other characters, he is incredibly boring.

Nero is ultra-boring

Nero as a character in the story is definitely boring. But as a playable character, he's quite fun. Sure, he only has one weapon set, but the combos, the intricacies of the EX gauge, and buster action make him a rather powerful character. I personally find him more fun than Dante.

Playing Devil May Cry for the story is kinda like watching porn for the plot, though.. You're just here for the action.

But Game of Thrones has a good plot from what I hear.

Correction: Playing Kobayashi's Devil May Cry for the story is kinda like watching porn for the plot, though.. You're just here for the action..

I play DMC for both story and gameplay. I got extremely disappointed with DMC 4 after knowing that the game is only 40% complete and after playing the true canon DMC game, the first one... seriously, Kobayashi has no idea what he's doing with the series, he made DMC 4 to attract the female japanese audience and scrapped 60% of the planned content of the game to meet the release date of the peasant machines... Well, the catholical theme had so much potential, but the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ had to ruin everything again......
