Is Vergil actually alive or not?
I suppose that games go in this order:

1. Devil May Cry 3: Dante is young, he meets Lady/Mary, and he fights Vergil, who later stays in Demon World
2. Devil May Cry 1: Dante got bit older, he meets Trish, and he fights Nelo Angelo. Buuut, Nelo Angelo fades away, and it's not clear what happened
3. Devil May Cry 4: Dante got bit older again, whole crew is there, and Vergil misteriously appears? Huh?

Just..... i don't get it.....

Vergil's appearance in Special Edition is some time before events of Devil May Cry 3 (Prequel)

Something about him looking for clues about Dark Knight Sparda

Force Edge and Beowulf made appearance just for gameplay purposes

means vergil is even more younger in dmc 4 than dmc 3.... awesome

Couldn't they complicate it more? Why would one character in DMC 4 have a story before DMC 3. Who came up with this? How is anyone supposed to figure this out without the internet?

Vergils campaign in dmc4se is a prequel to the events of dmc3.

Vergil's campaing (And Lady and Trish's) can pretty much be considered non-canon entirely. Except maybe the actual cutscenes.

The timeline order for Vergil is:

DMC 4: The cutscenes at the beginning and end of Vergil's campaign basically just show him investigating the order of the sword probably. Or they may be entirely non-canon at all, because the gameplay is entirely non-canon for SURE.

DMC 3: Vergil attempts to do obtain the power of Sparda and unleash hell. Dante and Vergil fight, Vergil is banished to hell where he is eventually brainwashed by Mundus.

DMC 1: Vergil fights Dante again under the disguise of Nelo Angelo. He is presumed dead at this point, because he does not have any canon appearances past this point.

DMC 4: Vergil is presumed dead during this games time. But his soul/power seems to be semi-living on in Nero to some extent.

DMC 2 doesn't exist and no one wants it.

I think DMC4SE is just throwing canon out the window at this point, seeing that he's either dead or his soul is soul has taken the form of Nero's arm, seeing that sufficiently powerful demons take on the form of a weapon when killed. Strangely enough, none of the weapons wielded by Dante are based on the bosses at all, unlike the weapons in DMC1 and DMC3.

It entirely depends on your interpretation of his last fight with Dante in DMC1.

In the cutscene, the effects used are exactly the same as when he flies away in prior cutscenes. Just seems like he broke free of Mundus's control, ripped off his amulet, and teleported away. I think it's fairly safe to say he's alive for a simple reason - he's a popular character.

It's not the most popular, but it was pretty cool.

Also, Vergil doesn't make an appearance in DMC2, does he? All I remember is that next to Dante you get to play the Mannequin turned demon woman.

No he is not alive. Canonically, he died in the events of DMC1.

Nothing in the cutscene showed him die. Capcom could easily say "He never died"... and, it would make perfect sense.

Even if they made a cutscene where he explicitly dies they could still say that he never really died, it's their game afterwards, they can do whatever they want with it
