The way Mission Select works
I just finished Devil Hunter with Vergil and just curious if I have to play as N/D, L/T through normal to unlock each mission? Sure looks that way, but I was hoping to just jump right into any Devil Hunter I wanted with any character.

Well, I meant since I played Devil Hunter fully with Vergil, I wanted to go back to Mission 5 on Devil Hunter with Nero instead of Vergil but it doesn't seem to work like that.

Progression is shared between all characters except for missions of each difficulty. Using the example you provided, if you want to do Devil Hunter Mission 5 with Nero/Dante, you gotta get there with Nero/Dante, whether you got there with Vergil is irrelevant. Meanwhile, if you beat Devil Hunter with Vergil, you'd unlock Son of Sparda for everyone.
