I can do decent with the keyboard and you can remap the controls to whatever you want but your going to want to get a Controler when you can.
Play time depends on how hard you want to get penetrated or if you want to mash buttons on easy-auto. There's literally a difficulty setting that does combo's FOR you (can only be done in easy mode), and then there's a difficulty mode where the game is 30% faster and another where any damage taken is auto-lose (might be wrong on %).
On easy-auto mode you could probably go in fresh and finish the game in under 8 hours, on Normal or Hard you're looking at more like 12-15 hours since you'll probably die a couple times figuring out how to beat some enemies and repeat stages for more skill points. This is not including the extra story mode and the other set of playable characters in the main story mode
But the main strength of this game lies in a rich mechanics, so by enabling the auto mode you locking yourself out of a large chunk of fun.
Certainly subjective. My opinion is exatly opposite. I tried 360 controller for a few weeks and switced back to keyboard.
The thing is, it's very control-heavy game(especially when playing Dante) and PS/Xbox gamepads aren't very good at utilizing your fingers. This issue can be sidestepped by using "claw" grip, kind of like that:

but I think it's not worth it.
Having said that, donguri990, one of the best DMC players, uses gamepad to perform his awesome combos:

so it's boils down to personal preference. And Xbox Elite controller would probably be much better suited for this game.
In my opinion, both options are equally viable.
