This isn't quite helpful. It takes about 12 flying swallows to delimb one of those guys. You need to use another weapon that (for whatever reason) delimbs those enemies faster. The dragon sword combos, as well, can take about 5 repeats before any delimbing occurs. By then, more flying Van Gelfs will appear and instakill you with a grab/fireball.
The DS Flying Swallow is mostly to get in on the enemy so you can land near them, xxy, shuriken, OT. If the FS beheads, it's just an added bonus.
Don't get discouraged, The high damage and poor visibility can make some areas in MN feel too random. Even highly skilled players get killed by random things in MN due to awful balancing. Once you get past this awful section, it'll be a more pleasant experience... until the next awful spot which comes near the end of chapter 3. :P Fortunately, there's at least a save statue before that encounter.
If MN feels too hard and Mentor feels too easy, I recommend giving Fiend Busa's NG2BWhite mod a try. NG2BW's Mentor is similar in difficulty to MN in the official game, but it's much more balanced and relies more on skill rather than random luck. I highly recommend watching some expert videos of original NG2 before tackling NG2BW's Mentor difficulty, though.
Well, not really. There is people out there who play on master ninja without UT spam, no ninpo and no upgrades. Its just a huge learning curve comapared to souls like games. It takes a LONG time to learn all the combos in NG.
