Jokes aside, it depends on what your playstyle is. Chaining UTs is very effective but it might fit your playstyle. What weapon are you using?
A basic thing to remember is once you see a limb fall off you can instant kill that enemy with a strong attack.
Another basic trick is to use shuriken tosses to reset your light combos. The last attacks in your combos can have a lot of recovery frames, but if you keep canceling your combo with a shuriken toss and restarting it your combo string lasts forever and a lot of enemies can't escape it.
Beyond that just kind of spam flying swallow, Izuna drop whenever you have to opportunity, and then once you get some dots on the screen you hold block to make sure you don't pick them up, and then either swallow into jumping Shuriken toss into landing UT, or jumping Shuriken toss into landing UT. Just repeat that pattern until everything's dead.
Wind Path is great for when you have only a few strong enemies to clean up, but you're much better off just spamming swallow if you're dealing with a cluster of enemies.
Learn to on-land charge. It's performed by holding X/Triangle as you land after a jump. You'll absorb Essence in the area and perform either an Essence Technique (ET) or an Ultimate Technique (UT) based on how many Essences you absorb, or which color they are. One yellow results in an ET, two yellow or one red or blue in a UT. This will allow you to effectively chain these techniques from start to finish in large encounters. The original game is criticized for being too reliant on this technique, and it's not fully necessary to abuse it to the same extent in Sigma/Black, but it's just as effective as ever.
Other tools that provide i-frames are the Wind Path/Wind Run, Guillotine Throw and Izuna Drop. Certain weapons, like the Falcon's Talons and the Lunar Staff can initiate an Izuna Drop from the air and give you quick access to an Essence for on-land charge UT chaining. The Lunar Staff has a long reach and can drag moderately distant enemies up into the air for an easy Izuna Drop.
Also, the Lunar Staff's 360 ET/level 1 charge is incredibly overpowered and will kill most non-boss enemies in the game if even just a few hits connect. The game is still going to be brutal on PotMN no matter what you do.
