Complete newbie to NG
Played tons of Fromsoft games and DMC/Revengeance so I'm not new to games like these, but hit me with some pointers about how to learn and git gud.

the primary sword combo I use is X-X-Y due to its high delimb rate, then you cancel the recovery with a shuriken into an OT (Y on a delimbed enemy, basically a finisher), thats the most basic combo, very useful and very good

Sounds simple enough, thanks!

Shouldn't I actually stop and block while waiting for an opening?

In a game with no lock on, X+A is a targeted jump that helps a lot. All of its options are very good. Double tap X+A for the guillotine throw that works against human enemies. Bonus damage if they hit a wall, but most importantly you're immune to damage during the whole animation. Very useful to avoid explosions. X+A > A - jumping on enemy heads, staggers and opens up enemies for combos, also includes i-frames.

Learn to use the on land state. Whenever you land after a jump you can immediately go into running without the wind up animation, makes while running moves easy to use. More importantly, when you charge the UT (hold Y) in onland state, you skip the wind up animation of the charge. Provided there is essence on screen it will be consumed and UT will be charged instantly. Note that essence won't be consumed in combat as long as you are holding block or attacking.

Reblocking. Whenever your guard gets broken, you can cancel it into a dash which the game teaches you to do. It doesn't tell you that if you let go of the block button and hold it down again you will go back into blocking immediately.

Some strings can be cancelled with shurikens to make them safer and to do juggling combos.

you can but it leaves you as a sitting duck especially to delimbed enemies that suicide bomb you. basic strat is keep moving while over whelming the enemies with combos. This is for the OGs like myself but I suggest changing the controller scheme to the original games, makes things a bit more comfortable

No, enemies will grab you if you stay on the defensive.

In this game you can block while moving. try blocking and then moving left stick. this channel has great tutorials https://youtu.be/CjMtojQ2TJU?list=PLlaPzJgFPvkljio3H-nqxtvdKpSZkXPiG

Overall the game is like being ganked in pvp in elden ring but fun. move nonstop, separate enemies with a throw to kill individuals, group them up to do splash damage with flying swallow, use obliteration to get some I frames like backstabs is souls.

many will disagree but this game is pretty similar to souls game (especially with how recovery cancels work)
