So the cons are bad camera, way too much enemies, and unfair difficulty. The pros are its a very pretty game for it's time in my opinion, the combat IS fun and fluid, and despite the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mechanics there is a great game in it's design there.
Ignore Sigma 2, unless you want to play the mod that makes it like the OG. This game is not an exact remake of 2, just like Ninja Gaiden Black isn't 1:1 with Ninja Gaiden. It has less enemies, they are stronger, single target enemies do more damage, updated graphics, etc. The answer essentially boils down to how much do you want to suffer to fight more enemies. The difficutly of the original is not like Dark Souls or something, where you feel it's fair and you learn and improve, it's honestly frustrating ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ which is why the game failed to reach as big an audience as it could, but some people swear by it as the greatest action game of all time. I am not one of those people. I think it's worse than Ninja Gaiden Black in every way and am enjoying Black 2 more than the OG.
"Living Dead" over here summarizes some of the differences - focusing on the frustrations in the original.
Of course I haven't played 2 Black yet because I'll wait for a sale so you'd probably get better info regarding differences from someone that did buy it.
Short answer: this is for sure the best version of the game, but I don't know if I'd pay $50. A couple reasons I'm hesitant about the price:
- I am someone who is completely fine with playing games through game pass and not actually purchasing them, so I wouldn't pay the full price.
- I also have a bias against a full purchase because I already play it so much
- While you can't get Ninja Gaiden 2 Black any cheaper, there are alternative versions of the game with better pricing
I could go into the differences across the multiple versions but I truly don't think they're that significant. On top of that, the differences are never in the core combat of the game - that has always remained the same. imo, you'd really have to be nitpicking to dwell on the changes from the OG to this new version. If you really care to know what the differences are, just find a youtube video and you'll learn everything there.
Feel free to ask more questions but here's a few final points:
- The master ninja collection could be a good alternative if you're interested in playing the series. Ninja Gaiden 1 might genuinely be my favorite gaming experience of the series, but Ninja Gaiden 2 combat is just so damn good. Going back to 1 just makes me wish it had the combat of 2. I mean the combat is still pretty similar but 2 really took it to that next level. No one really likes Ninja Gaiden 3 that much because it felt like a downgrade in level and enemy/boss design, and now that we have the updated graphics of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, I will probably never return to 3. So I would say the Master Ninja collection really only makes sense if you're interested in playing Ninja Gaiden 1.
- The main draw of the new Ninja Gaiden 2 Black version: that the graphics are so much better now. I don't know what kind of specs you have, but I'm able to play this at 120fps 2160p and I love it. I am someone who is very picky about the graphics of my action games and this has not disappointed.
- gamepass has this new version and the master collection so you could just get both experiences there
- imagine that one of your favorite action combat games got a HUGE graphics bump. Would you care to play that game again with better graphics?
This "Black" version is definitely better than the version of this game that comes with the Master Collection, which is Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 (not vanilla Ninja Gaiden 2, which was originally released on the Xbox 360).
Ninja Gaiden 2 Black incorporates sensibilities and game design from both of those previous versions of Ninja Gaiden 2, but is more akin to Sigma 2 (from the MC) than it is to the vanilla version (aside from the return of all the blood and gore featured in vanilla NG2, which was completely censored out from the version in the Master Collection).
Coming from someone who owned the original NG, NGB, and NG2 on Xbox 360, I love this game.
