Like, this ♥♥♥♥ happens. If the developers wanted to build something that looks, feels, and plays like the original NG2, even if it isn't based on that source code, they absolutely could. It's just a matter of if they're willing to invest the time and money.
Instead, they decided on some comparatively minor modifications to Sigma 2, and porting it to UE5.
That was their choice. I wish they'd chosen differently.
