Deadlock II - Shrine Wars

Deadlock II - Shrine Wars

So hard?
I used to play Deadlock 1 in the 90's and I loved it, so evidently, I now wanted to give Deadlock 2 a try.
I started up the single player campaign and after 10 or so turns, I am dead. The enemy attacks me and either I lose and the game is over, or either I win and for some reason the game is over also (this was last time when I started without colonizing a second piece of land and just focussing on strenthening my first land).

It seems that whatever I try, the enemy crushes me in some way after only 10 turns or so. Very soon in the game.

I have read whatever tutorial/walkthrough's I could find on the internet. They all talk about abilities and strengths of races, about technology, buildings, ... I know all of those.

Can anyone give me some tips on how to beat this game?

Get your factories up and running quickly, start building laser cannons/troopers, build a laser defense or two in your town, make alliances, and so on...

If you are having trouble, try playing as Tarth. They have better units than everyone else, so you'll get more bang for your buck.

Make sure you are researching enough. Universities will often default to 50% research, 50% electronics. Make sure you manage that so you are not producing things you don't need. If you are getting pounded, choose some defensive techs to get started.

Also, try making alliances with the AI. If you have an ally it will be easier.

Thanks.

So I tried with Tarth, built lots op troops and cannons, researched as much as I could that had to do with defense but there the enemy invaded me with even more canons... I managed every building so it did as much of what I needed.
When I try alliances, they all laugh in my face.
I'll try again later, but it seems to me that this game (and I am talking about the campain) is unplayable?

Alliance can be tricky, but try early on praising/complaining to the AI. Different tricks work for different races, but it's not that hard to make friends. In the end though, you shouldn't need friends that badly. Once your population gets up you should be able to defend yourself on your own.

I havent played in awhile and i idk if steam AI is different but osarusan is right. You gotta start early with dialogue to show that you are friends with a particular race (praises/compliments) and enemies of their enemies (complain about other race(s)). Use scouts or disposable infantry to make hostile actions against their enemies and they should like you better. Always start with non-aggression pacts and build up from there.

I like generating a world with ~50% water, so there are islands. Find an island out somewhere big enough that you can get a good base going (around 8 zones, at least 1 hill (iron) 1 forest (wood) 1 swamp (energy) and 2 plains (money/air factories). I prefer Maug for faster research. It's usually turn 40-50 before the enemy even comes exploring, and then its just a colony ship. If you already have the whole island with 10+ population by then, the colonizer can't land and the enemy moves on. By the time they come back with an army you should be able to get going.

This strategy can get old after a while but it should help you get going. Also remember that if you really need them, Laser Defense towers can be very powerful early on. The later units will trounce them, but starting out units have a tough time against even 1-2 of them unless they are swarming.
