Guards AI will likely eventually get an buff/improvement someday anyways, as well.
I haven't used guards much, but I have used a good number of golems, and they are showing very nice hunter traits already (I don't know if this is something planned or something already in play, but I like what I see).
I am using a good number of towers but those are mostly for backup, for when and if my spells and golems do get overwhelmed, and secondarily as a place to drop attackers for cleanup after I grab them out of spots where my golems were getting outnumbered (tonight's attack will be the first attack since I cleared out the last enemy building, I'll see how I need to change my defense with the enemy having no focused spawn points, if I do need to).
So, tower defense is optional, in my opinion. Mazes are optional too, I am absolutely sure of that. And I guess playing in a way that bores you is optional too - care to try breaking out of your playstyle and finding a way to play that you enjoy?
