How to wall off water?
Whne I try and put a wall to the water, it gets to the shore, but won't place far enough down to prevent monsters from just walking around it on the water side of things.

Is there a way to prevent monsters from just walking along the coastline past your walls?

It won't matter, monsters can swim. :)

You need to wall off the entire coastline to keep them out, but you can you the destroy terrain tool (Bottom right) to make a land bridge, then build a wall over top of it.

Oh monsters swim.... well.. there goes my brilliant defense of having 3/4 of my base surrounded by water....

Water still has some benefit as Fire Elementals don't like going through water as it slowly damages them. You can use water to route them to different spots. They WILL still go through water if necessary but if you have an opening in a "moat" they will prefer that path. I like picking them up and dropping them in large lakes, they are usually dead by the time they can walk out.

Fire elementals just don't go through water willingly, at all. If you've completely blocked them from the village with water, they just idle in the corruption until they despawn in the morning.

What is with other fire elementals?
A fireelemental that was spawned when a meteor strike happened stayed on an island never leaving and never dying. Do they also despawn at one point?

If they can't reach the corruption, no.

This is true tho you need to keep in mind that drones actually fill in terrain when required to. I've tried this strategy before and the drones just kept filling it in. Wasn't worth the effort, at least in the map I was in.
