Don't build them butted up against the walls/other buildings. They need room to breathe. The lightning does an area-damage that's slightly larger than the lightning rod, so if you put the rod right up against a wall, the lightning will still sometimes damage said wall.
But, to answer the original question; the range is fairly large, 64 tiles in every direction. 2 or 3 of them can easily cover an entire village. The "range ring" (like the towers have) will be added before stable is out. :)
