It has been nerfed in Unstable 3 though, but it's still fairly large, and a range ring overlay has also been added so you can actually see the coverage. :)
Is that intended? It kinda defeats the purpose if it is. I just get to choose which buildings I want destroyed in the case of a bad storm?
Yep, it's intended. Don't build things too close to it. The damage radius of lightning is larger than the lightning rod itself. Keep all buildings 2ish tiles away in all directions and you'll be fine. ;)
