Also, warhammer vermintide (with char dev.) , though be warned, you might run into some strange bugs
1. Vermintide was free to play last weekend so I played an hour with bots. It suited me -- and I believe also my group of friends -- better than L4D2. I like the 'zombie movie' theme of L4D2 a lot, but the game itself is a bit bland (perhaps because I've only played with bots). Vermintide on the other hand had lots of character. I am a bit worried about the famed bugs and glitches, although I encountered none during my hour of play.
2. I also played 2+ hours of Synergy. Now HL2 is so solid a game that it just works. Still, it is a mod, and getting a game going can be confusing. There are no savegames: you join a game on one of the servers and are forced to play co-op with whoever is there. That also means severe limitations on where in the plot (which map) you start from. I think we'll have to set up our own server, but that means some work and getting another license of HL2.
3. I still haven't bought Hunted: Demon's Forge, but I see there are sales every few months. I also read that people have managed to play it over virtual LAN, so it is still definitely on the list.
4. I got two copies of The First Templar (super cheap from Tremor Games). I have to say it is quite similar to LotR: WitN. I know my friend with whom I'm playing also likes the themes of medieval Grail mysticism, which The First Templar exploits.
