how can I craft a fishing rod?

You will need a special bamboo stick, a strong plant fibre or the silk of a spider and a red fruit.
-To get the bamboo stick you just have too walk through several bamboofields, he will collect the bamboo automatically.
-The strong plant fibre looks the same as the normal ones, so try to grab every collectable plant.
-The fruits are either on the pirates, or on the trees. Try to hit the tree if you see some, then they will fall down. I used a pickaxe for this.

I have 8 bamboo sticks, so I take it there is strong or special bamboo sticks? I don't get the option to create a fishing pole with a regular bamboo stick. Thanks.

no all bambo sticks are the same you need to stick a red fruit and some heavy fibre

There is one type of bamboo stick, three types of fruit, and two types of fiber. You need the 'ripe' or 'red' fruit, and the 'strong' fiber. Or in place of the fiber, I believe you can also use spider web if you have that.
