If you have the patience, mount a grabber and a sounder on the sailing raft and learn the characteristic ping sounds by sailing towards the basic treasure markers, the lower, wider rings that don't disappear until you are right in them. Try approaching very slowly, pinging the sounder constantly to get a sense of how the return changes as you approach, and what it sounds like when you're right on top of the sunken chest.
Once you have a handle on this, using the sounder to locate the rarer large sunken chests and the even rarer cursed sunken chests will be a lot easier. I have a grabber and a sounder mounted on my small sailboat which has the additional advantage of tracking in a nice straight line so long as the waves are not too large. This makes it easy to line up on the rarer and thinner markers at a distance, and once they dissappear, use the sounder to gauge when to drop sail and drift over the sweet spot to grab the chest.
Yes you have to use the sounder once you get close enough to it because it disappears too.
I have my big ship and raft both equipped because I can paddle around in the raft with higher accuracy.
I've recovered about 5 cursed treasures already.... new ones add to the stack, so I could get a new one instead... just this first one that I get back to is bothering the completionist in me.
got those, then worked my way back and found another that was closer, but still couldn't find the original one... but I sailed to the extents, and as far as I can tell it should be at 0,0 which it cna't be.
