How to get a bamboo pole for the Fishing rod?

I'm on the first island and i see lots of bamboo. I have everything to make the fishing pole but the piece of bamboo. I have tried hitting the bamboo with everything i have and cannot aquire a piece. Is there something I must do or am overlooking? Any current advice would be most welcome.

Look in the bamboo you will see one that looks a little greener and a pickup hand will show up just pick it up like logs
