Caesar III which is a masterpiece among the games of this genre in our opinion.
True.

There is also the Rise of the Middle Kingdom, which improves on it.

Rise of the Middle Kingdom is the ultimate economic simulator game, and any eco-sim should look to it for inspiration. IN my opinion it did everything right.

Derp.

No, the citizens movements IMPACT the game. Shopkeepers, firefighters, priests, tax collectors etc affect all your buildings.

Of course you knew that, right?

omg but the visuals

I'm lot of time played c3, zeus, pharaoh and emperor, and i love all those games, but zeus was very hard unlogic economy system vs c3, emperor have simplified city simulation (and its makes the other team without simon bradbury), what about pharaoh? pharaoh is c3 with pyramids ))) It only my opinion

seems to be right, but as far as i remember Emperor had a more detailed and influential political and trading system than C3.

agree, but emperor has more then 6 years for it, i think when i will start code for political and ext. trade then may see for emperors realization

After some playing with the game you learn how to control your walkers and how to build stuff effectively.

Pharoh was good, Zeus was good, Ceaser III I played the hell out of (I got a copy for something like $5 at a big lots), and Emperor I put countless hours into (also got it at big lots for $5).

Probably two of the best purcahses ever.

Honestly if you want to play improved Caesar 3, play Pharaoh. It's also by Impressions Software and has very similar gameplay to Caesar 3, but improved in pretty much every way.

The first thing that I thought when I saw that this was being remade was why would they remake Caesar 3 and not the much better successor, Pharaoh, which did nothing but improve on the gameplay of Caesar 3... oh well.

because it doesnt make much sense to just take a "better" game and enhance nothing on it but take the weaker game (Ceasar 3) and enhance it with current technology and new features.
Besides that, the theme makes alot aswell. I personally think that Ceasar has the better theme and i enjoyed it more than Pharao.
Also, i dont know till now, because i kind of refuse to try it out at the moment, but if it is anyway close to other "remakes" like OpenTTD or OpenRA, then it doesnt matter which one they picked. OpenRA for example is an open source mod surface, you start the app and you choose whether you want to go for Red Alter, Dune2000 or Tiberium Conflict. So they not just chose to make RA but also give you the option to start other games remaked by them.
Also you can import mods of the C&C Series to the openra surface and start it there.
Its mostly an update platform to deliver new technique to the old games, make them run on newer OS and enhance gameplay and balance.

I think they will go for this OpenCeasar the same way. Where you can start it and the nchoose whether you want to play the enhanced version of Ceasar or Pharao or Emperor.

I'm sorry to drop in, but i read the discution, and, even though i only played C3 of the lot discussed here, i have to ask you guys, why no one mentioned Caesar IV ??? I played it, and seemed very close to Caesar 3 with some improvements.

well agreed, a remake of this one would be even better. Still i think i can kind of answer that to you. Im not entirely sure, so its just what i think could be the reason. Making this game needs them to recreate everything from scratch so people can play a game like this with newer technology while they dont have to own the old game and the creators dont need to own the license to create this game. If they took the code or assets, textures or music from the initial game, they could get problems with different companies owning the rights to the game and its distribution. Differently said, they couldnt take stuff from the original because that would be stealing.
So they have to build everything from scratch, make all the sprites and animations again. Its like cloning the old game but doing it by yourself so it is not a stolen game but just a copy of it if you want so.
And thats where the assumption starts, i think recreating a game like this with sprites in an engine like that is easier than recreating a whole 3D game like Caesar 4. This would need much more effort to do so=more costs=more time they need to realize it.
Also keep in mind, Caesar 3 is one out of a bunch of games in the same era. There was Pharao, Caesar, Emperor and Zeus(+variants of those) with the same look in sprite graphics.
So with recreating this engine, they can easily do all the buildings and other things again and just swap it out to deliver not just a OpenSource Caesar 3, but also a OpenSource Variant of all the other City Builder of that time. So they can make one app which lets you start many games and not just one.
Also this makes it easier to create user made stuff and import it.
For more information if you want so or need so, just check OpenRA, which shows what i meant with many games in one application or check OpenTTD as an example of graphics, music and other things being swapped easily.
