WASTED
FOV?
Any plans on adding an option to change the Field of view? Im curious as it tends to make me sick if its too low.

I've only played for 48 minutes thus far and it feels a little off, but that might just be me and my tired old eyes. I will make sure to sit down for a longer session later tomorrow to see if this is actually an issue, as i said before, i was mostly just curious.

The game is quite fun and looking forward to playing more :)

Aghfrhf, okay. So here's the deal. Because of how the game is rendered, as much as I knew I'd be walking into a minefield not launching with FOV options, it's impossible for me to decouple the FOV of the game world from the FOV of the first person weapon models, and deviating from the FOV too much ends up making the first person weapon models look REALLY, REALLY BAD (because you can totally see stuff that's supposed to be cut off by the screen's edge). Same goes for the ingame cutscenes and things like that.

THAT SAID, there is a secret line that you can drop in your config.sav file that will let you manually change the FOV, BUT know that it's going to make the game look uglier and that if you post screenshots with it on and share them with your friends, I'm going to be very, very, very sad about it :(

(basically, anywhere under the [display] heading, put a line that says fov=## where ## is whatever FOV you want to use)

Was just going to ask about the FOV. I'll try out the secret. The game is awesome by the way. Great work!

Changed it to 90. Looks exactly the same besides the arms being out pretty far. I'm used to this due to other games doing it so this is not a big issue. Thanks for the help!

Oh, just you wait... You'll see weird things like elbowless limbs floating around and my sweet, sweet rifle reload animations (i.e. just tipping the gun down and then tipping it back up again). Goldeneye 64 anyone?

Thank you so very much for explaining and even more so for providing a way to change it. It'll make a great game even better as i dont really care about how it looks. i care more about the gameplay :)

Oh and i hereby solemly swear never to post screenshots here or anywhere else with a changed FOV.

In TF2, setting viewmodel_fov too high makes it so that, for example, the Soldier's reload conjures rockets from thin air somewhere under the launcher, to be shoved into it, but people deal with it, 'cause it feels better to have the longer viewmodel closer to the center of the screen. We'll be alright. :watchingyou: u :watchingyou:

I'm so glad there's a way to change the FOV. I wanted to puke after getting through 3 floors.

Oh, i did see both of those things but they really didn't bother me. I'm just happy that there is a way to put the FOV up. I was getting a headache with the low one but i am willing to make a sacrifice to have the FOV at 90.

And yea, i will take no screenshots either. I'd rather not have you be grumpy <3

I know you might not like it but you might need to just put a ingame warning and manually include the pov changer under it cause people whine and given time and the fact people hate using that search bar for help this is gonna be said repeatedly

Could you sticky this or someone make a guide? I'm sure a lot of people would be willing to deal with the silly glitches for better FOV. It doesn't need to be in the game if it's going to negatively effect the gameplay/visuals but it's still good to have the option to for those who either don't care about glitches or get motion sick from the default FOV.
Mr. Podunkian  [developer] Jun 3, 2016 @ 9:39pm
Stickied -- hopefully this'll help other people get at this info too without having to dig too deep. At the same time, this is still kind of a hacky workaround, so just be ever-aware that it might affect the visuals negatively.
I just messed around with the config last night myself before this sticky went up and I noticed there's already a value for FOV in there, but it defaults to 50. Does this mean that the FOV value defines a vertical FOV, or is it really that low?

I set it to about '63' vertical which should be the equivalent of about 90-95 degrees horizontal. It's hard for me to tell at the moment because I've been playing DOOM with the FOV at 100+ so everything feels tiny now haha.

As a top-tip for anyone who wants to mess around with this stuff, downloading Notepad++ makes editing config files wayyyyy easier, because it usually fixes some of the display issues that regular windows Notepad has.

Yeah, it's a vertical FOV. I know a lot of people prefer horizontal (myself included, coming from the Half-Life 1 modding community! #hl2jks), but by the time I learned Unity was doing FOV that way, the game had gotten past the point where it would've been reasonable to switch it up and risk breaking things. Luckily there's online calculators for everything these days.

Also +1/Like/Yeah! to Notepad++ -- Window's built in Notepad doesn't like to display the linebreaks how they should be. In a pinch, you can just use Wordpad too, but really, everybody should have a nice plaintext editor.

I also found something that you might wanna see

https://www.reddit.com/r/Planetside/comments/1xl1z5/brief_table_for_calculating_fieldofview_vertical/
This guy made a calaculator for fov because Bad Company 2 did the fov the same way vertically instead of horizontal.
also the reason why it is making everyone so sick is accourding to it a vertical setting of 50 is the same as 79 degrees horizontal for a 1080 screen so its smaller than what everyone normally does also accourding to it 59 is the vertical fov for 90 degrees horizontal
